It Takes Balls

Capt. Michael Linhares, a Marine Corps helicopter pilot, works as the air operations officer at the combat outpost in Naw Zad, Afghanistan. He also coaches Afghan kids in soccer -- and other life lessons.

  1. Very nice story...but I was thinking..."watch out for that barbed wire!", which is pretty silly, knowing the world they live in. Good for the Capt. I hope he enjoyed that as much as they did.

  2. I am glad, Captain Michael Linhares, that your dad and your mom suggested at a teacher retirement party that I view this . I can certainly see why they are so proud of what you are doing, your dad being a former leader of students and now substitute teacher, and your mother still teaching. Great to get the kids off the streets and into something in which they can be kids, play and realize that they had to earn the privilege of having you as their coach. Inspirational!

  3. I am so proud of my son! You are my hero.

  4. It's people and stories like this that make you want to be a better person and help make it a better world!! His friends and family must be so proud of him making a difference to these kids and for being a true hero! What an inspiration!
Captain Michael Linhares (Scotty), you have become an amazing man! The world needs more people like you to give their time to positively influence kids! Thank you for serving our country with honor! I appreciate your bravery and sacrifice! I truly hope you experience every happiness life has to offer!! May the Lord bless you and keep you!
